Teddy Riner unseeded at the World Championships in Budapest

Teddy Riner is not seeded at the World Championships in Budapest. Riner lost 50% of the Olympic points after a reduction last weekend. Same counts for Olympic runner-up Hisayoshi Harasawa who is now ranked tenth and only the first nine are seeded as Russian Andrey Volkov won't compete. Japanese Ojitani is the last seeded. The 14th place is Riner's lowest position ever.

The eight time World Champion was ranked 11th in July 2010, but as low as 14 is the first time. An unprotected position makes the category +100 even more interesting.

The IJF World Ranking was introduced after the 2008 Olympic Games where Teddy Riner won a bronze medal. From September 2009 he led the World Ranking category +100kg. With small interruptions in 2010 and some weeks in 2013, 2014 and 2015 he led firm until May 2017 when in 2017 a new points system was introduced. With David Moura as new number one and the reduction of the Olympic points of Rio, Teddy Riner is not even seeded. Being number 14 of the World Ranking list only the first nine athletes are seeded, not even Harasawa, the silver Olympic finallist.

Teddy Riner debuted in 2007 at the senior World Championships in Rio and the 2006 world junior champion defeated Tamerlan Tmenov in the final. In Paris 2008 he won the Open title and in 2009 in Rotterdam he followed  with a third victory. In 2010 he won the plus category, but on Sunday in the open category he lost in the golden score to Daiki Kamikawa. His only loss in 48 contests, and  lost after 10 minutes with 2-1 by hantei while Kamikawa had a shido on the board. Still a legendary victory with impact.

Teddy came back winning  four consecutive titles and two Olympic gold medals marking all records the best athlete of all time and an icon for our sport.
