The morning session of the World Championships in Baku showed some great judo again. In the women’s U57kg no super surprises though as the pools delivered the favourites on top, but obviously there were more than 8 class judoka acting on the tatami.

In the pool A which is considered as the pool of death Rafaela Silva and Jessica Klimkait fought in the first round and the Olympic Champion lost to the gutsy Canadian. Also Sumiya Dorjsuren was in that pool and she bested Klimkait in the 1/8 final which meant the way home for the talented Klimkait. Dorjsuren moved up and overcame Helene Receveaux in the golden score.

In Pool B, we Theresa Stoll (GER) lost to Nekoda Smythe-Davis (GBR) in the quarter final and the British is in the semi final and can in theory be the first British female World Champion since 1997 when her coach Kate Howey won the world title in Paris. Casualties this morning were Hedvig Karakas (HUN), Miryam Roper (PAN) and Japanese based Chen-Ling Lien (TPE).

Tsukasa Yoshida (JPN) ruled in pool C defeating Telma Monteiro (POR)  and Kwon in the quarter final. Monteiro and Amelie Stoll are the bigger names who have to leave the tournament.

Canadian Christa Deguchi is the expected survivor of a tough Pool D which saw Sabrina Filzmoser (AUT), Priscilla Gneto (FRA), and Corina Stefan (ROU) losing their last contest. Deguchi came on top and defeated Nora Gjakova (KOS) in the quarter final.

Semi finals:

Sumiya Dorjsuren vs Nekoda Davis

Tsukasa Yoshida vs Christa Deguchi

Repechage:

Helene Receveaux vs Theresa Stoll

You Jeong Kwon vs Nora Gjakova
