Baku Grand Slam winner Kim Eunkyeong (KOR) is developing into a mature performer on the heavyweight stage and issued the latest example of her ability by winning +78kg gold. Kim conquered world number 15 Gulsah KOCATURK (TUR) on shido penalties as Kim received hansoku-make for four shido penalties which were given for negative gripping and passivity with two of each offence gifting the Korean the win.
In the first semi-final Kocaturk stopped the run of European bronze medallist Jasmin Kuelbs by overpowering her on the ground with a kesa-gatame yielding the maximum score after just 30 seconds of action. In the second semi-final Kim bested Konitz who had to tap out to a forceful hold down.
The first bronze medal was won by Konitz who defeated Ekaterina Sheremtova (RUS) with a come-from-behind victory by ippon after the Russia led with two yuko scores. The second bronze medal was clinched by Kuelbs who disposed of Qi Xiaonan (CHN) by osaekomi-waza as the Chinese judoka had no way out and was trapped for the full 20 seconds.
