Italian judoka Ylenia Scapin retires before Games time

Ylenia Scapin will not compete at the Olympic Games in Athens. The 29-year old Italian middleweight, suffered too much from her knee injury and has chosen to have it operated. Scapin was one of the possible medallists in Athens. It would be her third Olympic Games, in Atlanta (1996) and Sydney (2000) she has won a bronze medal. At the World Championships in Osaka, she finished third as well.

Scapin has won two bronze medals at Olympic Games, two bronze medals at World Championships, lost the European final in 1999 and won four bronze medals at European Championships as well. She has won 9 A-tournaments, her last one in March 2004 in Rome, and won the Italian Championships 9 times.
