Golden judogirl Gemma Howell too hot for rivals at trials
Shropshire's young judo stars hit the medal trail while re-writing the record books at the national under-20 championships in Walsall at the weekend. Gemma Howell and Becky Dunning both beat off stiff competition from the cream of Britain to take medals.
And the third member of the Telford trio, 13-year-old Kelly Edwards, performed admirably - despite competing against girls some seven years her senior.
But it was Howell who stole the headlines as the 14-year-old became the youngest person ever to win a medal at the championships - while also going head-to-head with an Olympian during a thrilling weekend.
Such was her domination, nobody scored a point against Howell in any of her fights in the Junior Championship as she eased to a gold medal.
And her performance was so impressive that British selectors invited her to join the senior championship 24 hours later.
