Unlucky Stephan Hegyi again injured

The unlucky streak of Austrian heavyweight Stephan Hegyi continues: The 24-year-old was out of action for more than nine months last year due to a torn cruciate ligament (on his left leg) and now suffered an ankle injury in the run-up to the Grand Slam tournament in Tashkent (UZB). Examinations in Vienna have now diagnosed a ruptured Achilles tendon (on the right leg). Hegyi will have to undergo surgery on Wednesday and will be out for a good three months.
The five-time European Championship medallist will therefore miss both the World Championships in Doha (QAT) at the beginning of May and the home Grand Prix in Linz (25-27 May). He should be able to return to training in mid-June.
"This loss hurts, of course. Stephan was just on his way back, would have wanted to make his mark on the World Tour in Tashkent for the first time since February 2022 (since finishing 3rd at the Grand Slam in Tel Aviv/ISR). We hope that he will be able to participate in the Olympic qualification for Paris in autumn at the latest," said ÖJV sports director Markus Moser.
