The Olympic dream of Romane Dicko

Romane Dicko wasn't yet 17 years old nor a member of the France judo team when she travelled to Rio 2016. She went to Brazil as part of a project organised by her judo club after a two-year fundraising drive.
“It was crazy. I was 16 years old and I was amazed. It was a chance to be at the Olympics, the biggest judo competition. Wow. The athletes seemed big to me and I was a little girl. Seeing them compete, with the boys bringing home their medals and the titles of Émilie Andéol and Teddy Riner was crazy,” Dicko told Olympics.com in July 2021.
In her last day in the stands of the Carioca Arena 2, Dicko was on the receiving end of an unexpected premonition. Just after being crowned Olympic champion in the +78 kg category, Andéol had a message for Dicko who had trained with her previously.
“I was in the front row. We saw each other, hugged and she told me that next time it would be me. At the time, it was just a dream - something unthinkable.”
As it turned out, the prediction of the Olympic champion came true, with Dicko coming third in the +78kg category at Tokyo 2020 and first in the mixed team event.
At 13 May, Romane Dicko will defend her world title at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
