For last year’s World bronze medallist Sanne Verhagen the year is over. Verhagen has torn her left hamstring at the European Open in Lisbon. In her second match against Swiss finalist Fabienne Kocher she sustained the injury and was carried from the tatami.

After research in the hospital in her hometown Eindhoven the injury unveiled as a hard blow, according to Verhagen. The 23-year old will have to take six to nine months for her recovery. The week before Verhagen won the Dutch title U57kg, so far her only victory of the season. The Olympic qualification is much more a worry for the number five of the European Games.

Verhagen is number fourteen of the world and eleven in the Olympic qualification. The Olympic qualification process ends on May 30, 2016. "We will have to look after the operation how the recovery proceeds. Even if there is only 1% chance of the Olympics, I'm fighting for that one percent."

Verhagen earlier this year won bronze at the Grand Slam of Tyumen and silver at the Grand Prix in Samsun. In 2014 she claimed the only Dutch medal.
