World number 15 Nyamsuren Dagvasuren of Mongolia entered his home event as the number one seed and was a class above the U81kg field in Ulaanbaatar. The Mongolian, who was not picked for the Olympics, faced Czech medallist Jaromir Musil in the gold medal contest.

The Czech fighter failed to qualify for Rio 2016 despite some awesome weeks in the last period of the qualification. Both men looked to put their Olympic misery behind them as they chased top spot in Mongolia. A flying juji-gatame attempt from Musil almost backfired as the Mongolian ended up on top of his adversary but without any control for a potential holddown. Nyamsuren achieved his best Grand Prix result by throwing Musil for the maximum score with a sode-tsurikomi-goshi after three minutes.

In the first semi-final four-time Grand Prix bronze medallist Nyamsuren defeated Lee Hui-Jung (KOR) by a waza-ari with pure te-waza control and used up two shidos for blocking to wind down the clock and safely pass into the final. In the second semi-final Musil thwarted 22-year-old Afig Safarli (AZE) by ippon with a juji-gatame with 69 seconds remaining.

The first bronze medal was won by former Jeju Grand Prix silver medallist Jung Won Jun (KOR) as he defeated Safarli with a spectacular uchi-mata with a minute left on the clock having led by a waza-ari. The second bronze medal was also won by South Korea as Lee beat 22-year-old IJF newcomer Batmunkh Altansukh by ippon after 45 seconds with a booming osoto-makikomi.
